After Steinberger’s post went viral, an Anthropic engineer publicly stated that the company did not ban users for OpenClaw usage and offered to help resolve the issue. A few hours later Steinberger said his access had been restored. TechCrunch reports Anthropic has not yet clarified what triggered the suspension or how it was resolved.

On the surface this is a support ticket gone wrong. In reality, it highlights three uncomfortable truths about today’s AI platforms.
First, subscriptions were never going to survive unlimited, automated agent workloads. Claws like OpenClaw can run long‑lived loops, retry tasks and orchestrate many tools. That is fundamentally different from a human sending a few chats per day. Anthropic’s move to push these workloads onto usage‑based APIs is economically rational: if it didn’t, power users would arbitrage cheap subscriptions into heavy agent compute.
Second, the way Anthropic rolled this out – and the fact that an influential open‑source maintainer ended up banned right after complying with the new rules – sends a clear message to the ecosystem: building critical tools on top of a single proprietary API is dangerous. For European developers and companies, this story hits several pressure points at once.
First, dependence on a handful of US‑based AI APIs becomes a tangible risk. For buyers of AI‑powered software, it’s time to start asking vendors blunt questions about who really controls the underlying models and what happens if that access changes.
