Claude has reportedly become the number one app on the US App Store and holds the top spot in 15 other countries, with Anthropic claiming over one million sign‑ups per day and a tripling of daily active users since January. Paid subscribers have doubled, the company says. Web traffic to Claude has grown strongly month over month, while ChatGPT’s web visits have dipped slightly and its mobile uninstalls have risen.
ChatGPT, however, still dominates overall with an estimated 250.5 million daily active users on mobile.

Apple’s public fight with the FBI over iPhone encryption helped cement its privacy branding and likely sold a lot of iPhones. In cloud, Amazon’s and Microsoft’s deep defence ties have long pushed some NGOs and academic institutions toward alternatives, even when the core product was weaker.

Expect the immediate spike in installs to level off; outrage‑driven adoption rarely grows linearly. The more important metric will be retention over the next six to twelve months. Do users who installed Claude out of principle keep paying for it when the news cycle moves on, especially if OpenAI or Google release visibly more capable models?
Anthropic will also be tested on consistency. Saying no to certain Pentagon demands makes headlines; maintaining coherent, transparent policies over years is much harder. How will the company handle offers from allied democracies that want more advanced defence capabilities but promise strict oversight? Where does it draw the line on police, border control, or intelligence‑agency contracts outside the US?
Regulators will watch closely. The EU AI Act foresees codes of conduct and transparency around high‑risk uses.
