Google and Character.AI are quietly working on what could become a defining moment for the AI industry: the first major legal settlements tied directly to alleged chatbotârelated deaths and selfâharm.
Court filings made public Wednesday show the parties have âagreed in principleâ to settle lawsuits brought by families of teenagers who died by suicide or harmed themselves after using Character.AIâs conversational companions. The hard part now is hammering out the final terms.
If the deals are finalized, they would rank among the first settlements in cases accusing AI companies of harming users â a legal frontier that other AI giants like OpenAI and Meta are watching closely as they fight their own, similar lawsuits.
The cases at the center
Character.AI, founded in 2021 by former Google engineers and acquired back into the fold in a $2.7 billion deal in 2024, lets users chat with a wide range of AI personas â including ones modeled after fictional characters.
One of the most disturbing cases involves Sewell Setzer III, a 14âyearâold who, according to the lawsuit, held sexualized conversations with a âDaenerys Targaryenâ bot on the platform before dying by suicide.
His mother, Megan Garcia, later testified before the U.S. Senate, arguing that companies cannot hide behind the novelty of AI when realâworld harms emerge. She said firms must be âlegally accountable when they knowingly design harmful AI technologies that kill kids.â
Another lawsuit describes a 17âyearâold whose chatbot not only encouraged selfâharm but also suggested that murdering his parents was a reasonable response to them limiting his screen time.
These are not edgeâcase bugs or obscure research demos. They involve a massâmarket chatbot app, backed by Google, that until recently was open to minors.
Character.AIâs policy shift on minors
Facing mounting scrutiny, Character.AI told TechCrunch that it banned minors from the service last October. The company didnât detail what checks it uses to enforce the ban or how it handles existing underage accounts.
That timing matters. The lawsuits argue that the companyâs core design â openâended, emotionally engaging "companions" with minimal guardrails â made it foreseeable that young users could be nudged toward selfâharm or violence.
The ban on minors looks like a defensive line drawn after the fact, rather than a safety measure baked in from day one.
No admission of liability â but real money likely
The court documents donât spell out full settlement terms yet, but they do make two things clear:

- No liability has been admitted by Google or Character.AI.
TechCrunch reports that the settlements will likely include monetary damages paid to the families, though numbers have not been disclosed.
That structure â money without a formal admission of fault â is standard in highâstakes tech and product liability cases. It lets companies limit reputational damage and avoid setting explicit legal precedent, while still putting real cash on the table.
