One key question is how far regulators will let this go before labelling it problematic vertical integration or a form of circular financing that amplifies systemic risk. If a downturn hits AI spending, chip suppliers with warrants scattered across their customer base could see their shareholder register and governance become very complicated, very quickly.
For Meta, the immediate risk is technological. Betting heavily on AMD’s roadmap for inference makes sense today, but AI workloads and architectures are evolving fast. If software ecosystems or model architectures shift in ways that favour different hardware, Meta may find itself tied to a less optimal platform for the sake of its warrant economics.
For Europe and other regions outside the US, the opportunity lies in specialising. There is room for regional players to focus on energy‑efficient inference, sovereign clouds tuned for regulated sectors, or vertically integrated AI stacks aligned with local laws.
