At the same time, high-profile figures like John Carmack and Epic’s Tim Sweeney argue that AI tooling will be ubiquitous in game production.
Sharma takes over while Xbox faces falling console sales, a weaker focus on exclusives, and a strategy shift toward bringing Xbox experiences to more devices. Senior Xbox executive Sarah Bond has also left, while veteran Matt Booty has been elevated to oversee content and work closely with Sharma.
Why this matters
Sharma’s appointment is significant for two reasons that rarely collide at this scale: Xbox is led by an AI product boss at the exact moment players are deeply suspicious of AI in creative work.
