The reports of workers seeing people having sex, showering, or using the bathroom are not just another Meta privacy scandal. They illustrate a structural problem with today’s AI boom: whenever a company says “we use human reviewers to improve our models,” it often really means “strangers might watch your most intimate moments.” In this analysis, we look beyond the headline outrage to what this case tells us about AI wearables, data supply chains, and the limits of consent.

According to Ars Technica, citing a Swedish investigative report, data annotators employed by Sama, a Kenya‑based contractor to Meta, say they have reviewed video captured by Ray‑Ban Meta smart glasses that includes highly intimate scenes. Sama and similar firms earn lucrative annotation contracts. The hidden cost is pushed onto people who never signed up: partners changing clothes in a bedroom, children playing in a living room, guests walking past in a hallway, or bystanders in a café. Even many owners of the glasses likely do not fully understand that their clips, once routed through cloud processing or Meta AI, can enter a pipeline where human reviewers may watch them.
